Fruit Fly Brain Observatory


We are writing to advertise availability of 2 project opportunities in the Bionet Lab. The positions are for 3-6 months starting in June 2016. The projects are associated with the Fruit Fly Brain Observatory that won the Phase I competition of the Open Science Prize, and will compete for the phase II prize with the other 5 finalists. The students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with an international team. The position will be paid and qualified students can also opt to receive course credits.

Position 1 (Graph Database API):

This position will involve designing a high level python query API to a graph database being built in the lab for aggregating and querying information relating to the fly brain. The API will define constructs that will mitigate the need to write complex low-level queries in order to extract relevant information for the particular domain of interest.

Requirements:

  • Qualified student must be well versed in python and query languages.
  • Previous exposure to graph databases preferred.
  • Knowledge of gremlin preferred but not required.
  • Exposure to neuroscience/biology not required but is a plus.

Position 2 (Web Interface Development):

This position will involve designing an interface to a graph database being built in the Bionet lab for aggregating and querying information relating to the fruit fly brain. The web interface will rely upon an API exposed by the backend and provide an intuitive portal to access the database and visualize results.

Requirements:

  • Qualified students must be well versed in responsive web design and javascript
  • Knowledge of AngularJS (or experience with other MVC frameworks) preferred.
